The Environment & Business (E&B) directorate works with partners to bring ambitious leadership to environmental opportunities and risks. We set strategic direction to ensure the organisation will deliver benefits for the environment and people. We address the challenges and opportunities of EU Exit and secure future investment.
The office helps our Executive Director to work more effectively with the leadership team, Directorate and other internal partners, but also across Defra, government, external customers and partners. It ensures the efficient flow of high quality information. It enables timely decisions, responses and connections which maximise our impact. It facilitates leadership of and by a Directorate that has over 800 staff.
As the Executive Advisor you are responsible for providing timely, efficient, customer-focused advice. You will brief, support and coordinate services to and on behalf of our Executive Director, maintaining an overview of the Executive Director's workflow, sourcing, collating and communicating concise, timely information to them. You will oversee preparation for meetings, take minutes and lead a forward look for the office working closely with the Executive Support Officer.
The two staff in the Executive Office are part of the E&B Business Support team and have particularly strong links to our Business Strategy team. Both teams sit in the Sustainable Business and Development department. The Executive Advisor will work particularly closely with staff focusing on governance, communication and engagement, to provide seamless and resilient leadership support. You will be a skilled at influencing the business, winning the trust and confidence of senior managers. With the ability to judge executive priorities, make connections, and choreograph events, you will ensure that the Executive Director is fully briefed to maximise their impact in a complex, demanding and fast-paced landscape. Resilience, tenacity and will be important, as will foresight and contingency planning.
You will have:
• exceptional networking and relationship-building skills,
• a personal presence and be confident delivering briefings
• excellent written communication and editorial skills
• sound judgement based on the interpretation of a number of complex factors and an instinctive appreciation of risks
• experience of facilitating leadership teams or other high level governance groups, and helping to ensure their decisions are effectively actioned
• strong planning, coordination and project management skills
• an eye for quality, opportunities and innovation

This post reports to the Business Support Team Manager.
As the Executive Director, CEO/Chair’s Office and other key customers are in London, the role will be based in London.
The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder. Your role will contribute to the Environment Agency’s response to major incidents such as flooding.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to London for assessment on 26 or 27 April. The highest scoring candidate(s) will be invited to meet Executive Director, Harvey Bradshaw soon afterwards. A decision will be made after that.
