The Environment & Business (E&B) directorate works with both internal and external partners to bring leadership to environmental opportunities and risks. We set strategic direction to ensure the organisation will deliver benefits for the environment and people. We address the challenges and opportunities of EU Exit, and -secure future investment.
The office helps our Executive Director to work more effectively with the leadership team, Directorate and other internal partners, but also across Defra, government, external customers and partners.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Executive Support Officer to join the team. As the professional administrator at the heart of this small team, you are the first point of contact for customers, managing the diary and mailbox for the Executive Director and his office, and secure approvals. In this varied role you will also organise meetings and visits, whilst operating support systems and processes. We are looking for you to continuously improve the way we work and take others along with you.
The two staff in the Executive Office are part of the E&B Business Support Team where 17 highly able professional administrators sit directly alongside. The office has particularly strong links to our Business Strategy team. Both teams sit in the Sustainable Business and Development department. The two teams have extensive skills and experience. They work in harmony to support leadership and to support one another. The working environment is happy, trusting, supportive and high achieving.
You are likely to be an experienced professional administrator and/or have excellent organisational skills, experience and insights providing support in a strategic and politically-charged environment. Along with a good understanding of the business of the Environment Agency, you will work with efficiency and authority, maintaining the confidence of executive managers in a complex, demanding, and fast-paced landscape. Resilience, tenacity, and responsiveness to changing situations will be important, as will foresight and the ability to anticipate and prepare contingencies.
You will need:
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills
• The ability to prioritise incoming asks from multiple sources and work well to tight deadlines
• The ability to work autonomously, judging when to delegate and escalate
• Exceptional relationship-building, inter-personal and customer skills
• The ability to make connections and share insights/best practice to help join-up work and increase impact
• Knowledge and experience of administrative systems, tools and processes
