This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of informing and shaping future agriculture policy.

We are looking for someone with knowledge of the agri-food sector to join the Future Agriculture Team within the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate. You will take a leading role working with Defra’s Agriculture Regulation and Enforcement Programme to inform future agriculture policy by providing technical expertise and preparing evidence to support design and delivery of the Agriculture Transition Plan and beyond

You will be politically astute with excellent communication skills and experience of engaging influencing and advising partners and senior leaders; taking decisions and solving problems; evaluating data, preparing evidence and prioritising work in order to achieve timely results.
The One Agriculture Team sits within the Water, Land and Biodiversity function of E&B. We steer the direction, set the priorities and shape our organisation's approach to delivering environmental outcomes and better regulation.

We work closely with colleagues across the Environment Agency, with Government, delivery partners and customers, and the agricultural and food and drink sector to help to create better places for people, wildlife and the environment and demonstrate value for money.
Applicants need a detailed technical understanding of polluting activities associated with farming and how to manage these practically within a farming business. An understanding of the effectiveness of regulation and the implications of future changes on farm businesses, our organisation and the public purse is desired. Knowledge and experience in approaches and interventions that help with the management of nutrient and slurry pollution would be beneficial.

You will be politically sensitive with good communication and networking skills enabling you to establish strong and influential relationships with Defra Group, government and industry partners to promote and enhance the Environment Agency’s goals and reputation.

You will be able to interpret and evaluate evidence to propose solutions for challenging problems and have experience of prioritising and delivering work e.g. within a project management framework.

its is desirable that candidates have, or be working towards, a professional qualification or membership of a professional body.
You may work from any office, subject to agreement with facilities management and will be able to work flexibly from home. Some travel to other locations including Defra and Environment Agency offices may be required as part of the role.
