We regulate emissions to air, land and water from a wide range of major industrial processes and work with partners to reduce the risk of pollution from these sites. You’ll play a vital role to ensure our effective regulation of industry continues, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable growth. You will also help protect communities and people’s quality of life whilst helping industry be good neighbours and to comply with environmental legislation as they grow their businesses.

You will be required to visit a range of industrial sites to inspect and audit environmental management systems and assess monitoring results and other data to ensure compliance with environmental permit requirements. When necessary, you will gather evidence and use the legal powers we have to take enforcement action against operators to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise their use of resources.

We also have an important role to play in preparing for and responding to environmental incidents. You will also work across teams within the organisation to support our incident management responses, investigating incidents and making sure suitable remedial action is taken and, where appropriate, evidence collected to enable enforcement action.
Based at either our Darlington or Newcastle offices, we regulate process industry sites across the North East, including the major industry around Teesside. Involving a range of sectors: Chemicals, Incineration, Combustion, Metals, Paper & Pulp, Cement and lime and Food & Drink and sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations you'll tackle a diverse range of environmental challenges working with a range of teams across our organisation and externally with professional partners.
Either previously as a regulator or having worked in regulated industry, you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of, and experience in, the environmental regulation of process industry. Because of the diverse environmental challenges in the North East, we are looking to recruit people that may have a range of backgrounds. Experience in any of the process industry sectors described above would be an advantage.

You will have a good technical knowledge and excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate how you would apply the principles of better regulation.

You will be able to confidently and quickly deal with complex and fast changing situations by adopting a pragmatic approach to achieve the best outcomes for the environment. You will have a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline, and possibly be a member of a relevant professional organisation.
