International Waste Shipments (IWS) has a vital role in international trade and the economy. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work at the cutting edge of international trade agreements, ensuring that trade continues after the UK leaves the European Union.

EU Exit requires us to determine the Environment Agency’s role in managing imports and exports of waste. The Environment Agency and Defra have a number of projects to ensure day one readiness for EU Exit - you will be instrumental in shaping our future role and ensuring the IWS regime is effective as possible.

With a lead responsibility for waste shipment regulations, you will oversee our correct handling of the EU Exit process to prevent significant impact on multi-million pound industry and the UK economy. You’ll provide expert advice, guidance and training, and implement and monitor processes that turn policy into cost effective operational delivery. You'll work with government, industry and internal operations teams, each placing different demands on you.

This is a challenging role requiring you to grasp government policy, understand industry burdens and guide operational delivery to help deliver the best outcomes as we navigate our way through the EU Exit process.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.

You will work with frontline colleagues, Defra and other government departments and industry to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment whilst supporting economic growth.
You will have a broad knowledge of the waste industry with particular experience of international waste shipments, including the classification and regulation of hazardous waste. Ideally you will have experience of interpreting legislation, influencing the creation of policy and interpreting detailed technical guidance.

We work with a number of external customers which include local government, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants - experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into the Environment Agency.

This is a nationally dispersed team and regular travel will be required with occasional overnight stays. Regular destinations include Birmingham, Bristol and London.

Applications close on Wednesday 20 February at 11.55pm. Interviews will be held in Birmingham week commencing 18 March.
