We are looking for a leader who has the experience, vision and passion to set direction and provide strategic focus to a talented and value driven workforce of approx. 1500 individuals.

There has never been a more interesting and important time to work in the environment sector. As the world grapples with climate change, species loss and challenges to water quality and supply our work at the Environment Agency more critical than ever.

You will already be motivated by a desire to create a better place for people and wildlife. In this role you will be accountable for a wide range of business activities and delivered through a healthy safe and diverse workforce.

Including:
• work to reduce the risk of flooding
• regulating industries
• advising on sustainable development and farming
• improving water quality and managing water resources.

Specific accountabilities include:
• Influencing our strategic direction to ensure achievement of our corporate strategy and environmental outcomes
• Providing active and visible direction on health, safety and wellbeing
• Building a vibrant culture in which all the Environment Agency’s staff feel valued and focused to achieve great things
• Taking a shared lead in managing national incidents and emergencies.
You will be part of the Local Operations Leadership Team and work collaboratively together to ensure that all frontline activities are aligned and reflect the priorities of the Corporate Strategy.

You will lead a team of Area Directors to inspire, encourage and assure performance within their geographic area.

You will also play a senior role in working with external partners and leaders.
To excel in this prominent position, you’ll have extensive leadership experience in a large operational business, demonstrating skills in strategic thinking, and translating this into effective delivery and business improvement.

You’ll be emotionally intelligent and able to build consensus, influencing senior level stakeholders to make the best choices for the environment and our business. This will be shown through evidence in your career track record.

Your vision and guidance will develop your teams’ capabilities and empower them to improve the world around them. Your ability to engage and flex your communication style means you can have a great conversation resulting in effective outcomes, with all you meet, whether out in the field with one of our operations team apprentices to meeting with senior ministers in Whitehall.

You’ll have a strong understanding of effective crisis management and knowledge or willingness to learn how to manage national or large-scale incidents and emergencies.
National and overnight travel will be required.
