The Senior Technical Advisor is a member of the Coastal Modelling and Forecasting team within Evidence and Risk, Incident Management and Resilience. We are looking for a technical expert that will be able to ensure our work is of the right quality, ensuring our evidence is robust, credible and defendable for all coastal flood risk purposes. You will provide Technical Leadership to our Coastal teams and specialist advice, guidance and support to the leadership team and to internal and external partners in order to effectively underpin risk based decision making and support environmental outcomes. You will be recognised technically and professionally as a lead expert in in all aspects of coastal flood modelling. You will coach and mentor our teams to build technical skills and reliance, enabling our people to achieve their goals.

The post reports to the Coastal Manager and you will be an integral part of the Coastal Modelling and Forecasting leadership team shaping the development of the service as we introduce new approaches and guidance to manage coastal and estuarine flood risk. You will support 2 delivery teams covering the English Coastline and a specialist technical team focused on improving our confidence in coastal flood modelling.
This is a dispersed team providing the leadership to provide technical assurance service for all flood modelling on the coast, technical advice and guidance for complex land use planning including Nuclear New Build and maintaining and developing the local coastal flood forecasting service. Our main customers are the Area FCRM teams though we are expanding our services to coastal risk management authorities.
We’re looking for someone who has:

Excellent knowledge and extensive experience of evidence that underpins the understanding of flood risk with a specific understanding of the coastal and estuarine processes.

A good understanding of how our coastal and estuarine flood risk information is used, especially in terms of standards and national datasets.

Experience of the techniques, modelling packages, data and guidance used to model wave transformation, sea levels, wave overtopping and flood inundation e.g. EurOtop, SWAN, TUFLOW.

As well as strong technical skills, we are looking for someone who has:

Excellent Technical leadership skills that inspire and motivate others and present visible leadership of modelling development for coastal flood risk.

The ability to mentor and coach others equipping them with the knowledge and skills to deliver their work in an effective and efficient manner.

Excellent communication skills, enjoys building relationships, managing expectations and collaborating, to influence or deliver outcomes.
This is a permanent, full time position. Interviews will take place late October / early November 2019. You can chose your base location from our main offices (Warrington, Leeds, Solihull/Birmingham, Reading, Peterborough, Exeter, Worthing subject to Facilities approval) with the requirement of some travel and occasional overnight stays, as the team are dispersed. You will be expected to undertake an incident management role which will, on occasion, require you to work outside of office hours; you’ll get a choice of role and support and training to do it.
