Are you an ecology professional with a drive to make the world a better place?

We are looking for an exceptionally talented Fisheries Technical Specialist to join the Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) Team in West Midlands.

This role will focus on identifying/supporting large multi-functional projects and keeping track of strategic programmes of work to help FBG and our stakeholders deliver environmental improvements to deliver Water Framework Directive objectives. The post holder will be the principal contact for both internal teams and external partners in ambitious catchment scale project support. They will develop and provide the correct technical support to projects within the organisation and externally to enable our partners to restore “good ecological status”. This will be achieved by direct management, project development and partnerships. There will also be an expectation to mentor and coach team members and liaise with other functions as necessary to develop and deliver the project outcomes.
You’ll join a passionate and dedicated team of environmental experts based across the West Midlands within our Operations Directorate. The team has strong focus on delivering Water Framework Directive outcomes and the targets of the 25 year Environment Plan through our operational and regulatory activities, and partnership working to improve the environment for people and wildlife.

You will be qualified to at least degree level in Fisheries Science, Conservation & Ecology, or similar and have practical experience in the field of at least one of the disciplines; fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology.

You will have experience of developing and delivering large habitat improvement projects, this could include fish passes, river re-profiling or habitat creation.

You will need to demonstrate that you can focus on efficiency, innovation and quality, use your initiative to take decisions and solve problems. You will need to be able to build and sustain relationships with colleagues and people we work with and communicate effectively with experts and non-experts. You’ll be experienced in seeing the big picture for our work and understanding the different motivations of individuals, teams and organisations that we engage with.

The role will require a full range of communication methods, it is essential that the applicant can prepare written reports, business cases, briefings, and presentations that engage a wide audience for example public stakeholders, partners, leadership teams and directors. It is essential that communication is easily understood, inspires, is persuasive and engages attention from the audience. Give an example of where you have had to communicate to wide audience, describe the medium you used and why, how was this received and what feedback did you receive?
Focuses on Efficiency, Innovation and Quality
The applicant must show a proactive approach to embracing new innovation, learns from events that help towards improvements in performance and efficiency. They access knowledge and concepts from a broad range of resources.
