The Senior Technical Officer role will be based in the International Waste Shipments Team (IWS) within Waste Regimes Operational Services (WROS) part of Operations Regulatory Services (ORS). We’re a national team with officers based across England, ensuring a consistent regulatory approach across the country.

As a department we ensure that companies are disposing of their waste correctly by enforcing government regulations – ‘right waste, right place’.

As a Senior Technical Officer, you will:
Guide, advise and support team members on policies and practices to help resolve issues.
Provide specialist advice and support to internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with policy and legislation.
Responsible for building technical resilience of the team, and sometimes wider, within a specified area of knowledge through mentoring and training.
Deal with confidential and sensitive information whilst keeping in line with data protection guidelines.
Developing and producing processes, procedures, and technical documentation to support management decisions.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role. This may attract an additional payment.

WROS is a supportive and inclusive department that encourages our teams’ health, safety, wellbeing, and development. We aim to improve the quality of recycling and ensure waste entering and leaving the country is handled appropriately for recycling and recovery. We help to protect and improve the environment by regulating industry, ensuring compliance and eliminating illegal activities.
Key areas we regulate are: Packaging Waste, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Batteries and International Waste Shipments.
We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate:
• Proven experience, usually gained within a regulatory or technical expertise in the relevant field.
• A detailed understanding of relevant business practices and procedures to enable management of, or planning for, delivery across multidisciplinary teams.
• Required to understand, influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders. Needs to understand the audience and communicate at the right level.

Interviews for the Regulatory Officer role are expected to take place in March. They will take place in MS teams.
You will need to be comfortable with working in a dispersed team. The Environment Agency utilise a hybrid working approach, including office and home working. Some travelling for training and meetings in Sheffield and Warrington is expected.
