The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment.

Working at the Environment Agency is your chance to have a positive impact on the environment, a great work-life balance, and a varied workload with no two days the same. We are looking for a Senior Hydrologist to join our Wessex Area. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to join a team passionate about protecting and improving some of the most sensitive areas of the UK.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, inspirational, and experienced, and who has the skills to ensure that we can meet the evolving environmental challenges of protecting and improving the unique landscape of the Somerset Levels. As a key member of a new project team your work will focus on the recently announced Somerset gigafactory, while also supporting the wider Wessex Hydrology team. This is a unique chance to influence an exciting development, vital to the government’s Net Zero Strategy. Your technical skills will be essential, as will your ability to innovate and work with partners to develop novel solutions to complex hydrological challenges.

As a Senior Hydrologist, you will use your technical knowledge and experience to guide the organisation, developers, and external stakeholders on reputationally and politically sensitive technical issues. You will be working internally and externally to influence local policy and ensure decisions are based on sound evidence and good practice. You will have a diverse work life, from evaluating hydrological models to developing effective regulations, and collaborating with partners.
You will be a core member of the virtual project team, comprising of Technical Specialists and managed by a dedicated Account Manager focused on enabling sustainable development.

You will report to the local Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land Team. The Hydrology Specialists provide technical expertise and advice on water resource management and regulation across the Area. You will therefore benefit from a friendly and experienced, multi-skilled team of technical advisors.
You will be highly experienced and technically expert, with extensive understanding of hydrology and water resources, including low flow hydrology, hydrological modelling, and can demonstrate skills in data interpretation and visualisation, to inform decision making and problem solving.

It is desirable that you have an understanding of how Water Resources links to related disciplines, e.g. high flow hydrology, hydraulic modelling, fluvial ecology, and geomorphology.

You will be an excellent communicator, effective across a wide range of audiences, having the skills to turn technical detail into compelling argument.

You will have an ability to innovate and use data and information to solve complex challenges.

You will be educated to at least degree standard (or equivalent), in a relevant scientific discipline. Chartered status is desirable.

You will need to be in Somerset frequently to carry out site visits and work from our offices.
