The intern will work with research experts, academics and Environment Agency business customers to review the evidence for the airborne spread of micro-organisms that are resistant to antimicrobials including antibiotics and antifungals.

The intern, in discussion with Environment Agency staff, will be able to decide the focus and depth of this work in the following areas:

a) Review of published and grey literature reports of AMR spread by bioaerosols or agricultural fomites
b) Development of a conceptual model for potential airborne environmental risk pathways for AMR and human health
The output is likely to be a synthesis of the science in these areas, and an outline scope for further research.
We are a small group of experienced research scientists within the Environment Agency with expertise in a wide range of technical areas. Based at various locations around England we have to operate flexibly and deliver work that is readily accessible to our operational colleagues. We look at new issues and translate external research findings into use for the Environment Agency. Most team members have higher degrees and several years’ experience.
Applicants might have a background in microbiology, biological or environmental science or medicine.
You will be studying towards, or have recently completed, an undergraduate or master’s degree and have good communication and writing skills, and the ability to critically review and synthesise scientific information for a non-expert audience.

Additionally, you’ll be:

• Confident working with quantitative and qualitative data and information and be able to draw reliable conclusions.
• Able to demonstrate a variety of communication methods used to convey ideas and present complex information in an understandable way.
• Naturally inquisitive, and a logical and analytical thinker.
• You’ll be comfortable working independently as well as part of a team.
• Competent MS Office user.

Scientific Knowledge
This post will provide you with an opportunity for you to apply scientific research knowledge and skills in a working environment. You will work in an applied research team, so the role will particularly suit a research student who would like to understand how research is translated into practice. This is a relatively new technical area for the Environment Agency (and indeed beyond) as the importance of environmental AMR to human health is increasingly recognised. An appreciation of the development of resistance mechanisms and environmental risk assessment would be useful.
Applies Analytical Knowledge and Experience
This internship is a chance for you to apply the analytical skills, knowledge and experience you have gained whilst studying at university.
Environmental Awareness
The Environment Agency works to protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. Within England we’re responsible for regulating major industry and waste, treatment of contaminated land, water quality and resources, fisheries, inland river, estuary and harbour navigations, conservation and ecology and managing the risk of flooding. We are looking for a student who is passionate about these issues, and is looking for a career in environmental protection.
If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service. For applicants who currently work in local government or other bodies listed in the Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment in Local Government etc) (Modification) Order 1999, you may be eligible for continuous service for the purpose of calculating any future redundancy payment. If you are unsure of your status then you should contact your own HR Team.
