As an Economist in the EA, you will work as part of our national economics team to deliver corporate outcomes through analysis, tools and economic evidence. You will liaise with colleagues across the business, building effective relationships with them, translating their needs into economic work activities and helping them scope out research. We would like you to analyse, translate and disseminate economic data in order to improve decision making, as well as build capacity for using economics by working with operational teams directly.
You can expect to be involved in:
• Managing small projects or supporting larger projects
• Keeping up-to-date on changing legislation
• Mentoring and coaching others on relevant policies, procedures, practices and techniques
• Raising awareness within the EA of economics and evidence.
Economics and Social Science is a small but vital function that use economic information and analysis to help protect and improve natural resources, in a way that provides the best value for money for people and society. The team work across the whole of the Environment Agency to reduce flood risk, manage natural resources and regulate industry.
You will have a degree in Economics or similar subject with significant economic content, and either a Masters or some experience working as an economist. You will be able to demonstrate where you’ve worked closely with customers before, using a variety of communication methods to convey ideas, as well as be able to present complex information in an understandable way. Ideally, you will also have experience managing projects and working with customers to scope and design their needs. Additionally you’ll be:
• Skilled at working in teams or partnership with analysts from other disciplines.
• Able to show where you’ve worked with others to deliver outcomes
• Preferably have experience working as an analyst in the environmental field.

Scientific Knowledge
Undergraduate or master’s degree in economics which demonstrates ability to apply economics to public policy problems. A wide range of applications are relevant to the work of the Environment Agency, including microeconomics, environmental economics, industrial economy, and behavioural economics. Data and statistical analysis skills are essential. Prior experience of working as an economist in a professional organisation is not required.
