Are you meticulous and have the confidence to address non-compliance of the relevant environmental legislation whilst out on site? Do you have the skills to respond appropriately and effectively when dealing with hostile situations?
We are looking for an Environmental Crime Officer with experience of leading/supporting investigations, achieving results by working independently or with others, showing resourcefulness.
You will work in our Area Enforcement Team to tackle a range of environmental crime, focusing on high risk illegal waste sites and serious and significant waste crime. Using a variety of enforcement and disruption tactics you will seek to identify and stop these criminal activities to protect the environment and safeguard legitimate industry. You'll collect evidence, interview suspects and prepare casefiles and/or develop actions to disrupt the illegal operations across Cumbria and Lancashire. You may be involved in surveillance activities and might be asked to assist colleagues across the area so some travel and overnight stays should be expected, so the post requires a full UK driving licence. It is preferable that you already hold a Level 2 warrant, but this is not essential. In addition we are required to respond to office hours incidents and fulfil an Environment Management incident role.
You'll join a small and dedicated Area Enforcement Team based at Preston Lutra office, who specialise in dealing with serious and significant environmental crime, principally investigating waste crime but also conducting investigations into serious water pollution or other environmental offending when required.
To achieve our aims, we support our regulatory teams across the area and with enforcement and intelligence colleagues in other areas and national teams. We routinely work with external enforcement bodies.
The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following

• Experience of data and information management and competent in using various IT applications.
• An ability to be flexible and able to quickly prioritise sometimes conflicting workloads.
• Demonstrate experience in enforcement including the preparation of case files, interviews under caution and preferably P.A.C.E & C.P.I.A trained
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and you pay close attention to detail.
• Possess excellent technical knowledge of the Environment Agency's enforcement policies and procedures.
• Advanced influencing and persuasion skills and you're confident to lead difficult conversations.
• You're a self-starter that can effectively manage your own workload.
• You prioritise your own, and others, health safety and wellbeing.
• You'll have a good appreciation of Area enforcement work.

You will be required to go through the NPPV2 vetting process and pass the clearance. See additional information below*
Interviews to be carried out using MS Teams
We are committed to having an inclusive and diverse workforce that represents the communities we serve. These are full time vacancies, however we support flexible working and welcome applications for alternative working patterns, including part time.
The role will be based at our Preston office and there will be an expectation of travel to the office and as part of any future hybrid-working patterns as well as regular site visits.
For further information contact the Team leader Colette Whiting; colette.whiting@environment-agency.gov.uk or Grant Talbot; Grant.Talbot@environment-agency.gov.uk
