National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability (NEAS), part of Major Projects and Programme Delivery, manages the environmental assessments and consents for the flood projects that the Agency builds. Joining the team as a Senior Archaeologist you’ll play an important role in contributing to design to deliver environmental sustainability and deliver positive outcomes for Heritage.
The roles draw upon a diverse range of skills. Working closely with other teams, you will be involved in:
• Ensuring that design of FCRM projects are environmentally compliant
• Screening, planning and co-ordinating the delivery of EIAs
• Working with internal environmental co-workers
• Influencing and working with a variety of environmental stakeholders
• Identifying environmental opportunities and delivering multiple benefits
• Working with external suppliers and other Environment Agency specialists within integrated project teams
• Strategic Environmental Assessment of our strategies and plans
NEAS has responsibility for screening FCRM capital and revenue programmes for environmental risk and opportunities, playing an active role in environmental governance across the EA. NEAS works closely with Area and National FCRM teams supporting development and delivery of strategies, programmes and projects; provides technical advice and support into projects; manages impact and other assessments or design tools; leads in landscape and heritage matters; provides support to the Agency’s national R&D programme.
You’ll have a degree in an Archaeology related discipline.
You must be a member of Chartered Institute for Archaeology.
You'll have excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate and develop strong relationships with internal and external partners. It is advantageous to have project management skills too.
You should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of technical areas of expertise, such as project management, working with national and local heritage designations and in a planning environment, influencing environmental design through the mitigation hierarchy.
As part of the role you will be required to co-locate and work at other Environment Agency and delivery partner offices across the Delivery Hub. You may also be required to attend national meetings in locations such as London and Birmingham, with some overnight stays.
Driving licence ideally required as some driving may be necessary.

Environmental Awareness
Demonstrates a good understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and can confidently discuss technical matters with a range of environmental specialists. Understands how to integrate this knowledge into projects to improve outcomes.
Legislative Knowledge
Applies and interprets relevant environmental legislation and policies to individual situations. Has advanced knowledge in some specific areas, including the application of EIA. Can advise on interaction of environmental assessment with other regulatory regimes. Able to interface with legal teams to provide advice to project teams.
Programme and Project Management
Works within teams collaboratively and confident in applying EIA processes with limited supervision, for standard projects.
You must be a member of Chartered Institute for Archaeology.
