We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated applicant, who wants a career protecting people and the environment as part of the climate change agenda. As the role involves a combination of fieldwork and office work we’re seeking someone who enjoys working outdoors, in all weathers, and has the capability to install, test, calibrate and repair complex instrumentation.
The Wessex Area has a comprehensive network of water monitoring assets. The role will involve the installation, operation and maintenance of monitoring equipment and telemetry to collect river, groundwater and rainfall (hydrometric) data. Using your IT and computer skills, you will analyse and validate the hydrometric data collected in order to populate databases and ensure that it meets our customer needs. You will also be expected to undertake river flow gauging for station calibration and water resource management.
The Environment Agency takes part in incident response. This may involve out of hours working to participate in standby and call out rotas to ensure effective, efficient, timely and safe responses to incidents.
The successful candidate will join our highly motivated and experienced Hydrometry and Telemetry Team who collect and process the hydrometric data essential for the management of water in the environment. Our friendly, inclusive team works closely to operate and maintain hydrometric and telemetry assets to ensure accurate data is available for customers 24/7. Our monitoring service underpins many of the Environment Agency’s responsibilities relating to flood forecasting, warning, incident management and managing our water resources.
Qualified to A Level minimum (or equivalent).

Driving licence is essential.

Practical skills, an aptitude for numerical analysis and the ability to process information using Excel and databases.

Adept with telemetry and data logging equipment and experience of electronic field data capture, ideally from H&T, telecommunications, electrical, electronic or similar roles.

Comfortable working in and around water and capable of working alone in remote and public locations.

You must be able to swim as you will be working in/near water.

Able to demonstrate adherence to health, safety and well-being guidelines.

Problem solving skills and use of initiative to be able to work independently in a dynamic environment.

Well organised and able to plan workloads and re-prioritise during incidents.

Possess good communication skills to work well in a close-knit team and with key customers.

You will need to pass colour vision tests as you will have to maintain electrical equipment.
