The Iconic Thames Barrier & Associated Gates (TBAG) play a pivotal role in protecting over £321 billion worth of property and 1.42M people from tidal flooding in London. In this high-profile role as Engineering manager, you will be ensuring that TBAG remains reliable and operational.

As part of the Strategic Leadership Team reporting to the Tidal Thames Operations Manager, you will provide high quality specialist and technical instruction, management, advice and oversight to internal engineering teams, external supply chains and senior colleagues across the organisation.

Specific responsibilities to include:

• Effective reliability, availability, operation and maintenance of the operational infrastructure and associated support systems across the Thames Barrier and associated floodgates (TBAG) suite of assets.
• Maintaining an effective competent engineering team which is future proofed, by ensuring resilience now and into the future.
• Investment and asset management strategy for the short, medium and long-term
• Delivery of the TBAG capital, maintenance & training/development programmes, and TBAG gate trial and testing programme
• Accountability for all TBAG engineering strategies and policies and the approval authority for all engineering documents
• Taking operational decisions on when and how to operate London's tidal flood defences to minimise flood risk
You will be responsible for the TBAG Engineering Department of 50 people. The post has eight direct reports, including 4 Team Leaders who head up a variety of engineering and technical teams. You will act as "grandfather" manager in recruitment, performance, development and people issues for the teams.

The teams include electrical, mechanical, projects and contracts, operations, and maintenance teams. Additionally, you will have four senior technical advisors reporting to you, to provide technical support.
We are seeking experience of working in an operational, engineering environment.

You’ll be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline or have sufficient relevant work experience and be a chartered engineer/or working at an equivalent professional level.

You’ll have experience of:
• Line management and leadership with specific focus on engineering and operational competencies and operational response.
• High quality engineering, priority and risk-based decision making, including strategic planning for the future.
• Managing programmes of work and change, monitoring and intervening to maintain quality of delivery.
• Effective leadership on health and safety matters by promoting best practice to ensure a safe working environment.
• Analysing current and future workload trends and assessing resourcing needs across teams
• Incident and operational management and able to help solve complex problems.
• Thorough application of engineering, statutory and regulatory standards and procedures.
• Taking an ambassador role

Additional allowances per annum are:

London Weighting £3,776
Mechanical & Electrical Chartered Engineers £6,000
Site Allowance £3,000
After a qualifying period, Standby Allowance of around £3,000
