Tracking the UK’s 200 million tonnes of waste – where it comes from, where it goes to and what is done to it - is vital to maximising resource efficiency and preventing waste crime.

Improved systems and data are the fundamental change required to improve regulation, waste management, policy and economic growth. This project will transform waste tracking across the waste industry, and your work will be pivotal in achieving a successful integration into both regulation and industry.

The project will be led by a core Defra team and involve all four of the UK’s environment agencies. Representing the Environment Agency, you will work alongside this multi-agency team to bring this technology to reality by providing your expertise in specific waste sectors, policy creation and interpretation, and ensuring that the end product meets the needs of all users.

You’ll ensure that we address all key waste data gaps, deliver relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and provide a revolutionary solution which is simple and effective for regulators and business users alike.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to ensure our vision is transformed into a great system.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.
You will have a broad knowledge of the waste industry with significant experience providing technical expertise in environmental regulation of industry either as a regulator or through working for a regulated industry. Significant experience of hazardous waste regulation and classification is essential to this role. Ideally you will have experience interpreting legislation and influencing the creation of policy.

We work with local government, Defra, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants. Experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into our organisation.

You will need to deliver results through others from across the organisation and through our partners. You will be effective at influencing and persuading, a capable communicator and have a strong customer and partner focus. You will use these skills and your understanding of business processes to shape how the organisation operates.
