The heightened public interest and focus on recycling and reduction of plastic use is increasingly in the media spotlight. This is an opportunity to inform policy and develop processes that will help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment whilst supporting economic growth.

You’ll provide a key role in shaping circular economy strategies and oversight into the interpretation and application of waste regulation directives and legislation. By building networks within government and industry, you’ll ensure that the direction of work is representative of our goals within the 25 Year Environment Plan and helps our regulation of Extended Producer Responsibility.

You will work closely and collaboratively with central government (especially Defra), other UK environmental regulators and operational colleagues. You’ll be expected to provide advice and briefings across the Environment Agency and with our external partners.

You’ll lead on embedding the directives into our policies, ensuring that all outcomes are achievable. This role will be challenging; you will use your broad understanding of current and emerging waste sectors to identify the risks and issues that may inhibit our work. Identifying solutions to these problems will have a positive impact at different levels across government, the Environment Agency and for the general public.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.

You will work with frontline colleagues, Defra and other government departments and industry to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment whilst supporting economic growth.
A broad knowledge of and extensive experience within the waste industry are essential. Knowledge of or experience with producer responsibility compliance schemes and/or the circular economy is preferred. Experience of interpreting legislation and influencing the creation of policy would be advantageous.

We work with a number of external customers which include local government, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants. Experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into the Environment Agency.
