The waterways officer role will help contribute to the management, regulation and development of navigation. This will include recreation activities on and around all lock sites on the waterway and in the reaches associated with those locks. The post will help provide safe passage and enjoyment for boaters. It will also provide training to and mentor colleagues, and undertake enforcement of waterways legislation. You will assist other Waterway Officers, Team Leaders and Managers with their work by providing localised expertise and knowledge to ensure the most effective management of the navigation. The role will require regular weekend working.
The post will be in on of the five patch teams on the non-tidal Thames. You will report to an operational Team Leader and support and work with the team Technical Officer and lock and weir keepers.
Current driving license is essential
Boat handling qualification ( RYA level 2 powerboat/Inland Helmsman) desirable
Enforcement training (PACE level 1/2) desirable

Issuing and Maintaining Permits
A key aspect of this role is to undertake enforcement action in line with the appropriate legislations. This will included the issuing of enforcement notices. A methodical and structured approach to note taking and the delivery and collection of information is essential.
Navigation
The post will have a number of roles that require boat handling and crewing skills. An understanding of the issues and the safe navigation on the river Thames is important. The ability to work with others, and give and receive commands is also important
Incident Response
The post is an important part of the incident management duties of the navigation team on the river Thames. There is an expectation that the post hold will undertake a range of duties during waterways and wider Agency incidents and events. Appropriate training will be provide to ensure competency and effectiveness
