We are looking for an assistant nuclear regulator to work in our Nuclear Regulation Group based at Penrith or Preston. You will work in our Power, Defence and Disposal Sites team which regulates 12 nuclear sites and other premises in the Midlands, north of England and north Wales. You will assist our nuclear regulators in enforcing environmental legislation at nuclear sites and other premises, including Environmental Permitting Regulations (e.g. radioactive substances, chemical and combustion activities) and COMAH. You will also support our wider nuclear regulation programmes (e.g. new reactor build, geological disposal and nuclear site decommissioning and clean-up).
The Nuclear Regulation Group (North) is based in the Cumbria & Lancashire Area. Our nuclear regulators liaise closely with internal and external customers and partners to ensure efficient and effective regulation. We work closely with our colleagues in the Nuclear Regulation Group (South) based in Wallingford and also with the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Ensuring we maintain the confidence of the public, local authorities, and other partners is an essential part of our role.
You are someone with nuclear, industrial or environmental experience, particularly in a regulatory context, who is, or has the potential to be, technically competent over an extensive range of nuclear industry and environmental issues. We expect you to have a good understanding of Government nuclear related policies and priorities and a wide national perspective on the regulation of the nuclear industry by the Environment Agency. You will be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and should bring a well-organised approach, with excellent communication, IT and team-working skills. Professional membership of a relevant body is desirable but not essential.
Closing Date: 17th August 2018 at 23:55 hours
For further details contact Andrew Fairhurst (+44(0)7823 536744).

You must have the ambition to learn and develop your talents and we will expect you to undertake a structured programme to develop your knowledge of the nuclear industry and your technical skills. The role requires strategic involvement in nuclear emergency and incident response, including national arrangements for overseas and national nuclear incidents. You'll require security vetting to Security Check level. The role will be based across office and nuclear site locations in England and Wales so there will be frequent and occasionally unscheduled travel. The post requires a full UK driving licence.
