We are looking for Environment Officers to join our Waste Management Teams in the West Midlands Area. The teams cover the counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire, Birmingham and the Black Country, Warwickshire and Herefordshire.

You will be responsible for regulating a range of waste activities to ensure that these are carried out without polluting the environment or causing harm to people. Sometimes we have to take tough action to achieve these aims and at times you will need to investigate environmental offences which might necessitate producing legal casework to present to the criminal courts.

The role will require you to take preventative actions to reduce the likelihood of waste fires and respond to incidents of waste crime, as well as supporting wider incident management. This will include taking part in a duty rota to provide a 24 hour response to incidents.

This is a challenging role and you may need to deal with situations that are confrontational. Good communication, influencing and persuading skills are therefore essential.
You will be part of a waste management team based at 4 locations within the Area. You will work in a large geographical area which has a diverse range of environmental challenges.

A significant proportion of our work involves advice and guidance so it’s important that you have good influencing skills and can think laterally to resolve problems. You will have the opportunity to develop technical expertise such as the management of particular wastes.
We offer a full training package supported by a team of highly skilled and experienced waste regulators. You will work towards becoming warranted to carry out environmental enforcement work.

You will have the minimum of an A Level in a relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience. A degree in a scientific subject will be an advantage.

You must be a confident and effective communicator used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes. You will be proactive, self-motivated and flexible to effectively work independently and as part of a dispersed team.
Closing Date: 26th November 2017 at 23:55 hours

The Environment Officer role is a career grade position. This means that incremental increases in pay are linked to the achievement of defined training points. Training to attain full competencies as a waste regulatory officer will take at least 19 months.
