We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join the Environment Agency’s North East Sustainable Places Team. Your work will help make the North East of England a better place for people and nature. The Environment Agency is a statutory consultee for planning applications which are in line with certain criteria. The Environment Agency ensures development not only has no negative impact on the environment, but also that it enhances and protects the environment when possible. A response must be provided to the applicant within 21 days, unless an extension is agreed.
The successful candidate will be responsible for screening planning applications that are submitted to the Environment Agency, logging planning applications onto a system, and requesting responses from internal consultees. The responses are then formatted and sent out to the applicant by the Planning Advisors that sit within the Sustainable Places Team.

Your work will involve:
- Screening incoming planning applications against a set of criteria;
- Logging the planning application on to the Development Planning System (DPS);
- Checking environmental constraints within the locality of the planning application site;
- Sending out consultation request emails to internal technical consultees.
The Sustainable Places Team liaise with our specialist teams, providing high quality advice to Local Planning Authorities, Marine Management Organisation, and Developers, influencing new developments to ensure protection of the environment, promote sustainability, and minimise risk from flooding.

The team is knowledgeable and supportive. We deliver the EA's role as a statutory consultee in the Town Planning and Marine Licensing systems. To do this the team works closely with internal technical experts.
Essential
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage and enthuse/co-ordinate others.

- Some experience of using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook
Desirable
- Understanding of the planning system
- Experience with using mapping/GIS systems
