If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and tackling issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries, and conservation.

Permitting Officer is a key role which supports the regulatory duties carried out by the EA. You’ll assess applications for a range of flood risk activities across the country by carrying out technical assessments and working with other technical teams; the permits you deliver will help to protect the environment and local communities. Part of your role will also be to develop and support other permitting officers.

You’ll join our dedicated National Permitting Service. Working with a team of permitting officers, you’ll assess a caseload of applications and make decisions on applications, working within environmental permitting legislation. It's varied and challenging work which supports the creation of a cleaner and safer environment. You’ll develop relationships with a range of partners and support key functions, including flooding and environmental incident response.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a brand-new team of Permitting Officers for our evolving Flood Risk Activity permitting regime.

You will be part of the wider National Permitting Service, who’s primary purpose is to protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth by assessing applications for environmental permits.

You will be based at one of our national offices with the option to work flexibly.
Experience of environmental permitting is not essential. Most important are your key transferrable skills, relevant professional qualities and a genuine passion for protecting the environment.

Essential skills include the ability to:

• Make and justify informed, timely decisions based on analysis of complex technical data
• Coach and support others through technical challenges
• Effectively manage your own time and workload
• Successfully meet performance targets and deadlines
• Communicate effectively and build strong relationships with customers and partners
• Work with data, manage information, and use Microsoft office and other relevant applications

Desirable skills:

• An understanding of flood risk management data
