The Environment Agency works to create better places for people, wildlife, and supports sustainable development.

This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in entering a career that can make a real difference to the local environment.

We’re looking for a Hydrometry and Telemetry Officer to focus on our data recording and validation. You’ll predominantly be working in the office, with some site visits across East Anglia to understand our network more.

We’re looking for enthusiastic people who can use initiative to solve problems. You’ll play a key role in managing our data collection and storage, processing and validating all the data brought back in by our field team and our telemetry systems. In turn you will be ensuring that the Environment Agency is best prepared to respond during environmental incidents; helping to protect people and livelihoods from the impacts of flooding.

This is an entry level role, and we’ll provide you with full on the job training led by our experienced team members as well as formal training provided by external training suppliers. You will be fully comfortable in the role before being asked to complete any projects on your own.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

This is a fixed term assignment until 28/03/2025 – Internal candidates, please note you must ensure you seek agreement from your line manager to apply for this role.

This information is used throughout the Agency and underpins a lot of the decisions that the Agency makes. The data we provide allows real time analysis to facilitate the issue of flood warnings or manage abstractions, as well as an archive service to inform thinking on water resource or flood risk planning.
What we’re looking for:

- A positive can-do attitude and a passion for learning and protecting the environment.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills as you will be working as part of a team and will have contact with the public.
- Logical and analytical approach to problem solving.
- Numerate

Due to the nature of the role the below criteria are essential:

- Confident in the use of Microsoft Office
- Experience of data management

It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had:

- Awareness of different hydrometric monitoring methods and the resulting data.
- Awareness of data collection & management systems.

The candidate pack and generic role profile should be read along with the advert to understand the key accountabilities and skills needed.

Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed into the team and given the training and support needed.
