We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to join our Regulatory Waste team in the Solent and South Downs area as an Environment Officer. We have positions available for trainee officers (EOA). You will be based in one of our area offices in Romsey, Worthing or Pevensey.
Being an Environment Officer is one of the most important roles in the Environment Agency. You will tackle a wide range of environmental issues arising from legal and illegal waste sites covering various sectors which may impact on the land and water environment. If your application is successful, you will join one of our critical frontline teams working directly to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife.
In the Waste team your work will focus on operators and companies in the waste sector. The work is varied, vital and often challenging. Sometimes you’ll need to work with operators to help them operate legally; while at other times you will be enforcing the law and making sure operators improve their performance.

Full training will be provided and ongoing professional development, such as becoming a Practicing Environmental Regulator, is actively encouraged.
You will be part of an enthusiastic and supportive regulatory waste team, responsible for regulating a variety of waste operations across the South Coast. We work to protect people and the environment and support sustainable growth. We target our efforts on the highest risks and poorest performers.
The job of a waste environment officer will require:
• A strong regulatory focus and good influencing skills to move companies and businesses from correction to prevention;
• Excellent customer service and engagement with local communities and operators;
• Effective incident response. The job requires the ability to:
• Ability to work independently and make decisions about priorities and appropriate action on a day to day basis to achieve planned outcomes.
• Influence and deal successfully with difficult people/situations.
• Communicate well and develop and maintain good relations with customers, and adapt behaviour to different people and situations.
• You will be expected to use a range of computer systems and software applications, so you will need to be confident using technology.
We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment.
We support flexible working hours and practices.
We also encourage you to keep developing your skills and professional knowledge throughout your career.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 Responder, responding to serious flood and pollution incidents, protecting the environment, lives, and livelihoods of the communities that we serve. Everyone has a role to play during incidents and we’ll help you identify an incident role that fits with your skills, experience and personal circumstances.
