A new opportunity has arisen taking the lead to shape the way in which we handle flooding, ensuring that Solent South Downs Area is exemplary in keeping the public informed and warned as appropriate on flood risk.

You will have dual responsibility, firstly for the strategic oversight of the Duty Officer rota (up to 20 duty officers), shaping incident response and the associated infrastructure to ensure the provision of an effective service - striving for excellence. This includes development of recruitment strategy (with the national lead), to increase the number on the rota and exploring the options, alongside the expectations and requirements of their substantive post to accommodate both ongoing training requirements and participation on the rota, training, review and quality assurance to ensure resilience and longevity.

You will be required to undertake the relevant training and participate as a member of the duty team.

Secondly, you will be responsible for undertaking projects and other work in relation to relevant team and departmental challenges. Examples include working closely with the Area Incident Team and Apprenticeship Program.

Flexibility will be required to undertake additional responsibilities commensurate with the broader responsibilities and expectations of roles at Grade 5 level.
The team ensures our Area (Solent and South Downs) is prepared for, responds to, and recovers from floods through delivery of the flood warning service, planning for incidents, coordinating the response, installing telemetry to improve our warning service, inputting into flood incident plans and procedures and testing these as appropriate. This includes raising awareness of flooding with partners and communities ensuring they are better prepared to respond to flood events.

• You are well organised and can analyse information and use results to make decisions, with relevant approval and/or make recommendations for consideration.
• A sound knowledge of operational activities, including management of flood risk assets and knowledge of the Ops incident response systems/processes alongside a willingness to undertake further training as required.
• An understanding of the types of flood risk affecting the Solent and South Downs area and how our rivers, coasts, estuaries and groundwater impact on our local communities.
• Have awareness of modelling techniques used in flood plain mapping and forecasting and in the use of the Flood Warning System.
• A degree in a relevant scientific discipline, e.g. environmental science/hydrology/geography would be advantageous but not essential.
