We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Permitting Officer to join a Waste Permitting team in Bristol.

You will determine applications for environmental permits for waste activities, by carrying out technical assessment according to Environment Agency processes and regulatory obligations.

You will be expected to make and document your decisions after following relevant sector guidance and utilising specialist advice from other teams.

You will focus on the less complex applications initially. You will be mentored by more experienced officers, and be expected to develop your own knowledge independently, to allow you to move onto more complex work.
The team’s primary function is to determine permit applications relating to a range of waste activities including landfill, biowaste, metals recycling, transfer and treatment of hazardous / non-hazardous and clinical waste.

The team’s other areas of work include providing permitting support and advice to Area Regulatory teams and the wider business. As such we require officers who are keen to continually develop their technical skills to adapt to changing work pressures.
You will need to be able to demonstrate the following abilities:
• Using excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide exceptional service to a wide range of customers
• Working effectively as part of a team to achieve results
• Managing a varied portfolio of work
• Good time and record management to ensure delivery within tight deadlines
• Some understanding of environmental issues relevant to waste activities
• Use of IT systems, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Experience in Environment Management and the permitting process would be desirable, but is not essential.
