Want to help shape the way we track environmental change? This is an exciting opportunity for a statistician to join the Chief Scientist’s Group in a technical leadership role.
You will act as the Environment Agency statistical lead for indicators that assess progress towards the UK Government’s 25-Year Environment Plan commitments. Specifically, you will proactively contribute to the development and reporting of multimetric indicators on chemicals and water quality. This will involve:
• Collaborating with government/research organisations to maintain oversight of and steer trend analyses across an indicator,
• Liaising with data providers internally to understand and use their data to report trends and uncertainty,
• Scrutinising the power of the metrics to show change over time, ensuring we have meaningful and robust information,
• Co-working with colleagues to align indicator reporting with wider assessments.
The role will also support the creation and enhancement of tools for assessments which help characterise the state of our environment. You will be instrumental in evaluating the usefulness of our monitoring networks. Your work will shape improvements and help us get more from our data.
This post provides the opportunity to coach and mentor others, extending your influence and intelligence across the organisation

Background and knowledge:
• Degree or higher qualification in statistics or similar discipline.
• Strong experience of advising on statistical issues and approaches and of implementing statistical solutions, including assessing trends using Bayesian or alternative methods.
• Up to speed on emerging and proven statistical practices in terms of their basis and application, appreciating the wider implications of their use.
You will:
• be able to work on your own initiative,
• have excellent written and oral communication skills, able to adapt your communications to be understood by a range of audiences,
• have a passion for analysing information and solving problems, showing excellent attention to detail and quality assurance skills,
• be adept at engaging with customers and business partners to deliver the best outcomes,
• have strong organisational skills to be able to meet tight deadlines and prioritise workloads,
• influence others’ work through your knowledge.
