As a Senior Environment Officer, you will be at the front line in delivering Defra’s 25 Year Strategy for the Environment. You will provide technical support and leadership for a team of Agricultural Environment Officers across Devon and Cornwall as well as planning and delivering routine site inspections on dairy farms to prevent pollution. This will include supporting regulatory work where breaches are detected. You will be working directly with officers to help create a cleaner, safer, healthier environment for wildlife and people.
You’ll work in an operational Land & Water team in Devon and Cornwall reporting to the DCIS West Land & Water Team Leader. You will focus on providing technical and regulatory support to deliver an agricultural inspection programme for a team of new agriculture regulatory officers, to include compliance, regulation and performance target reporting.
You will have great communication and influencing skills and be comfortable taking decisions, mentoring others and driving environmental improvements and regulatory compliance.
You are likely to have a technical background and have experience in data management, legislation interpretation and application & assessment and of working with customers.
You may have inspected or audited sites, handled or investigated complaints and worked in a role in which you’ve had to lead difficult conversations with people.
Experience of technical leadership covering compliance, regulatory or enforcement work, would be advantageous
Familiarity with the geography and environment of Devon and Cornwall along with a good knowledge of the agricultural sector & economic priorities would be an advantage.

You must be able to drive and hold a full driving licence. We will provide a vehicle for your use at work.

Give an example of a time where you had to bring a site or a permit holder into compliance with legislation. What was the issue? How did you know that legislation was not being followed or complied with? What evidence did you collect and how? What were the key issues and how did you resolve the non-compliance either alone or in combination with others? What outcome was achieved?
Legislative Knowledge
Description: Applies a knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect both the Environment Agency and the environment.

Please provide an overview of the knowledge you have of environmental legislation applicable to the agricultural sector. What are the key pieces of legislation and what are they designed to do? How do you or would you keep up to date with new legislation or changes to existing legislation to ensure that those applying the legislation in a regulatory capacity were up to date?
Full clean driving licence is required
