The successful candidate will assist with the delivery of our water quality commission by undertaking laboratory analysis of macro-invertebrate samples to mixed taxonomic level and interpret and report this data. You'll also support the wider work of the Analysis and Reporting team through field work, data analysis and report writing. You will work collaboratively both within the team and with other Environment Agency teams such the Monitoring Field Team, Integrated Environment Planning and our Land and Water Teams.
There will be opportunities to get involved with a range of incident management roles, with appropriate training and support.
Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed into the team and given all of the training and support needed to succeed.
We cover the West Midlands from Staffordshire down to Gloucestershire and Warwickshire across to the Welsh Border. Our team is responsible for ensuring chemistry, ecology and fish monitoring programmes collect the information needed for a variety of legislative, national and local requirements. The team is comprised of ecologists skilled at monitoring fieldwork, laboratory work, assessing multi-functional monitoring data and turning it into evidence. This evidence informs the wider business and ultimately helps underpin environmental improvements.
- Macro-invertebrate identification skills
- Practical experience and familiarity with fieldwork and working in a laboratory.
- An ability to analyse, interpret and report ecology data
- Good understanding of health and safety risks when working in a variety of environments
- Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a dispersed team
- Ability to manage workload to tight deadlines
- Good communication skills
- Confidence in using Microsoft Word/Excel and database systems would be an advantage
- Relevant scientific degree
We are an area wide team covering the whole of the West Midlands. The post holder will be based at Tewkesbury (GL20 8JG) with an option to work from Fradley (WS13 8RR) once fully trained. There will be a requirement to attend pollution incidents and help with field work across the area, as a result the post holder must have a full driving licence.
