The Port officer will provide a front line presence at the Ports in the North East of England. Acting upon intelligence you will stop and arrange inspections of containers, trailers and vehicles at the port.

Working with a team of officers dedicated to disrupting illegal waste exports, you will;

• Act as a key point of contact between your team and the ports.
• Develop and maintain good relationships with local officers, the shipping industry and ports.
• Negotiate with and influence waste operators especially when their export standards are found to be below legal requirements.
• Review incoming data including commercially sensitive information and will be able to handle this accordingly.
• Work closely with our Intelligence Research Officers based in Solihull, who will help you develop the intelligence picture around illegal waste exports.
The Intelligence Team manage and develop all criminal intelligence for the Environment Agency. Made up of several roles and disciplines, we build and maintain strong relationships with our partners to work as one enforcement community and drive our intelligence led approach to tackling environmental crime. The team provide a professional and timely service and are focussed on continuously improving how we do things to make sure our outcomes meet our customers’ needs.
As a Port Officer you’ll draw upon a number of key skills and personal characteristics. You’ll need to:

• Have the confidence to learn new IT systems
• Be methodical in your approach
• Be innovative & take the initiative
• Be able to work under pressure, organising and prioritising your workload to meet deadlines

• Have a proven ability to work collaboratively with other teams and external stakeholders
• Handle information securely

You will ideally have a background in waste and waste regulation as well as a good knowledge of the surrounding legislation including waste and waste exports regulation.

This is a field based role and there will regular travel to sites of interest and overnight stays may occasionally be required but you will be given plenty of notice beforehand.
