An exciting opportunity to join the Coastal Flood Modelling and Forecasting team focussing on the East coast. Your focus will be on:

- Understanding the local coastal locations and coastal processes to ensure making best use of available coastal data
- Understanding the needs of others of the coastal forecasting
- Ensuring we understand the performance of our real time coastal forecasting capability on the East Coast
- Identifying solutions for how we can develop our service where the needs currently exceed our current service
- Undertaking reviews of the forecasting performance to identify whether the needs of others have been met

To be successful in the role you will work closely with Area and National colleagues. You will also work closely with others from the Coastal South and West Coast team to ensure coastal forecasting services are developed using good practice, follow consistent ways of working and make best use of available science.

The role will appeal to individuals who want to make a difference to our flood incident response, wish to make best use of the available coastal data and are able to communicate complex processes to the wider audience.
The East Coast Modelling and Forecasting team is responsible for the development and maintenance of the coastal flood forecasting capability from the Scottish border to the Kent Coast. The team also lead the development of our coastal flood modelling capability to support strategic flood risk management. Most of the team also support delivery of the 24/7 real time flood forecasting service on both the rivers and coast.
To be successful in this role you will require a good understanding of coastal processes including surge generation and the importance of waves. Ideally you should have some experience of developing operational flood forecasting or modelling services in the coastal environment. With knowledge of coastal modelling packages, flood mapping and associated data management, you will have a good understanding of how coastal flood risk information is used. As part of a delivery team, you will also have the ability to identify areas for improvement in existing methods of working. You should have strong communication skills to be able to explain complex technical issues to wider audiences verbally and through short reports. Above all, you will have a forward thinking approach to flood incident management and a real enthusiasm for making a difference.
