An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Geomorphology Technical Officer to join our Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) Team in Bridgwater. We are looking for a fluvial /coastal geomorphologist to help us protect, restore and enhance the natural environment.
You'll need a relevant degree with a significant geomorphology component of either fluvial or coastal geomorphology.

You'll be screening and advising on the geomorphological impact of our own works by our Asset Performance teams, and those proposed by third parties (permits). You'll support the Geomorphology Technical Specialist on complex proposals, including delivering improvements to the ecological status of our rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters. As case work is a large part of this role, you'll need to be a confident communicator, as well as having good technical geomorphology knowledge. The role has a strong practical focus, with regular site visits with colleagues to provide fluvial and coastal geomorphological advice.
You'll join a vibrant team of ecologists, fisheries and geomorphology experts within our Wessex Area office.
Major challenges include contributing to sustainable development and influencing our own and other risk management authorities capital schemes and operations. As specialists in the field of working with natural processes the team supports Natural Flood Management projects as well as a wide range of river restoration and fish passage improvement schemes.
Qualified to at least degree level in a relevant technical discipline. You must have relevant practical experience through your degree(s), and be able to apply your technical knowledge to influence water management in ways that work with nature and natural processes.

• You'll have good influencing and communication skills, and be a problem solver with a track record of delivering results through others;
• You'll be well-organised and have the confidence to work independently, on your own initiative, and to coach / mentor others to improve their capabilities in geomorphology;
• A good understanding of the requirements of WFD, particularly the hydromorphology element, is essential
• You’ll have practical experience of projects delivering engineering works in the fluvial/coastal environment.

A full driving licence is required for this role.

The post will be based in our main Area offices, and will necessitate working across the Wessex Area, including site visits and fieldwork. There will be some travel to other Environment Agency office locations, and there will be occasional long days and overnight stays.
