This role presents an exciting opportunity for you to join a small, dedicated core team of staff working full time on the HS2 project. You’ll provide technical expertise for all matters relating to groundwater and contaminated land on the project, covering both groundwater resources and groundwater quality aspects. You will be one of the principal points of contact between the Environment Agency and HS2 teams for groundwater and contaminated land. Focused on Phase 2 and you will also be the overall Technical Groundwater Lead.
You will

• Provide expert and specialist Groundwater and Contaminated Land advice and guidance to external and internal teams in order to influence compliance with Environment Agency policy / legislation / best practice ways of working and contribute to the delivery of business plans.
• Keep up to date on changing legislation / best practice externally, to inform internal priorities and appropriate alignment.
• Lead or participate in projects, providing functional / specialist input to improve ways of working and business change & efficiency.
• Build and sustain effective relationships with customers to understand issues and provide effective response / steer for operational needs.
High Speed Two (HS2) is the largest and most complex infrastructure project in the UK, proposing to build 330 miles of new track for high speed train travel across the country. The Environment Agency’s role is to provide advice, resolve environmental obstacles and regulate construction. We will also look for value-added opportunities around all aspects of the project.
Preferably educated to degree level or equivalent, or able to demonstrate comparable technical know-how, in a relevant subject; e.g. geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, etc.

On occasion it will be desirable for candidates to have, or be working towards, a specific professional qualification or membership of a professional body.
You will need

• Demonstrable, proven project experience, preferably infrastructure projects.
• A high level of expertise and understanding of Groundwater (both groundwater resources and groundwater quality) and Contaminated Land legislation. You will be prepared to provide expert advice and guidance on groundwater and contaminated land issues.
• Experience of working with government departments/regulators preferably on environmental issues.
• Experience of delivering work within a programme and project management framework to time, cost and quality.
• The ability to Identify, communicate and help to fill knowledge gaps in the business.
