We are looking for a groundwater resource specialist to join the Groundwater team in the Environment Agency’s Environment & Business Directorate to:

• apply hydrogeological expertise and be a pivotal part of transforming our regulatory approach to groundwater permitting as we implement the Environmental Permitting Regulations in water resources.

• be an advocate for groundwater and embed strategic principles to achieve sustainable and integrated catchment management.

• be at the heart of our groundwater resources modelling work and development of groundwater source protection zones.

• be responsible for hydrogeological technical support to national water resources teams and the wider organisation.

• gain experience in developing new approaches to embedding groundwater hydro-ecology into catchment management and improving the evidence base for groundwater and nature-based solutions.

• be at the core of our groundwater response to climate change.

• support a holistic approach to groundwater management and develop innovative approaches to resources, quality, heat, and ecosystems.

In this role we will provide technical coaching, development, and training opportunities. You will also acquire project management skills and work with national teams, Defra, and external organisations to deliver hydrogeological expert advice and guidance.
You’ll join our (Water and Land Quality) Groundwater Team. We lead on groundwater monitoring, permitting and compliance issues. We advise Government to ensure that the regulation of groundwater resources and quality sustainably balances the needs of the environment with those of businesses and society.

We’re based in the Environment and Business Directorate which supports the Environment Agency by using evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy and legislation and secure resources.
You will be:
• enthusiastic and credible: As a specialist you’ll play a key role, so you’ll be a passionate groundwater advocate.
• proactive, self-motivated and with good communications skills.
• be able to work flexibly and respond to competing demands in a time pressured environment.
• interested in sustainable catchment management.

Ideally you will have a sound technical knowledge in:
• hydrogeology, in constructing and interpreting conceptual models.
• groundwater resources regulation.
• the technical frameworks and approaches by which groundwater resources are managed within England.
• relevant environmental regulations.
We’re a dispersed team, so use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel. However, you may need to travel to meetings and some overnight stays may be required.
