This is an exciting opportunity to join a team working on a high-profile UK wide project. We are looking for an experienced individual to lead on data assessment, co-ordination, and articulation of Environment Agency data needs feeding into the digital design of the waste tracking service.

The waste tracking project aims to mandate the recording of all waste movements and transfers in digital format by 2024, making it easy to track the UK’s 200 million tonnes of waste in real time, throughout the economy. This project is helping to maximise resource efficiency and prevent waste crime.

The overarching project is led by a core Defra team, involving all four UK environment agencies. Our team works alongside this multi-agency Defra team and the other environmental regulators in the UK to help bring this technology to reality and embed it in our business.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

• Co-ordinating and articulating the Environment Agencies data needs and feeding these into the digital design, ensuring they have the relevant sign off
• Understanding and unlocking the potential of the data that the service could capture to meet the ambition of eliminating waste crime
• Coordinating data sharing agreements working with EA legal and data protection teams
• Making a wider contribution to delivery of the waste reform programme
• Making sure data elements align to digital plans of the Digital advisory team
• Leading a small data working group comprising of representatives across the four UK environmental agencies
• Influencing data custodians to improve legacy data to enable a smoother integration between the waste tracking service and the Environment Agency legacy systems
You will be expected to work closely with the Waste Regulatory Reforms and Regulatory Services programmes.
The Waste Tracking team sits under the Waste Regulation Reform Programme. This forms part of Waste Regulation within the Environment & Business Directorate. Further information on the Environment Agency’s organisational structure can be found here.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who has a good knowledge of how and why the regulator captures waste data, how that data interrelates and how waste data could be interpreted to influence actions or outcomes for effective regulation and policy.
The role requires you to be an engaging and inspirational person with the ability to work with colleagues beyond your own team. You will be working with staff across the 4 UK agencies, engaging with stakeholders from Directors to staff who work out in the field

We are looking for someone who:
•Understands agency waste systems and data
•Is a strong communicator
•Can build and maintain relationships with colleagues, partners, and team members
•Can influence and engage senior leaders
•Can manage work and deliver results in a fast paced and changeable environment
•Can understand the bigger picture with how this project links in with other organisational objectives
