This is an opportunity to join a flagship multi-agency science programme with a high profile with policy makers in Defra and HM Treasury. We are looking for a technical expert who will relish the thrill of being in from the start to join the programme, which will change how we make environmental decisions in England.

You’ll play an important role in shaping the Environment Agency’s, wider Defra group and other partner organisations approach to achieving more environmental outcomes in the estuarine and coastal environment. You will help shape the water side of Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme for estuaries and coasts. You will work closely with the Environment Agency’s Estuaries and Coasts Planning and Programme delivery teams on the design of a surveillance network for estuaries and coasts and support delivery of high quality, fit for purpose data and information. You’ll seek new methods and approaches in monitoring and data collection for NCEA, by working collaboratively within the business and with our partners, and ensuring a link to other NCEA projects. You will also scope work options to deliver monitoring for NCEA with consideration of our net zero targets by 2030.
The role will sit within the Coastal and Estuarine Assessment (CEA) Team, within National Monitoring Fish & Ecology. CEA provides a complete design, advice and assessment technical service supporting coastal and estuarine ecological outcomes. The team delivers operational, scientific and technical support to local and national teams, and to external national partners. It works to develop natural capital programmes and indicators to help manage, protect and restore the coastal and estuarine environment.
A passion and knowledge of the marine environment is essential. You will have an understanding of the ‘natural capital approach’ and how it can be used to drive decisions in managing the environment. You will have good knowledge of coastal monitoring programmes, including those under the Water Framework. You will have experience in performing evidence based assessments of the natural environment using indicators, metrics and narratives. And you will have experience in reporting evidence to inform policy and planning at a local and national level.

You will have strong project support experience and be able to work collaboratively within a dispersed team. You will have excellent communication skills and be able to present evidence with clarity. You’ll also need the credibility to work with partners at a local and national level and have demonstrable experience of doing so.

Strong data management skills, plus experience with using GIS datasets are essential.
