The Team Leader is responsible for leading a team of around 12 staff carrying out chemical and physical analysis of environmental samples as well as sample registration and preparation. You will need to demonstrate that you can motivate and develop staff to provide a world class service for our internal and external customers.
You will provide leadership to the team to ensure delivery of analytical results and analytical method improvements and developments through the delivery of small projects.
You will be able to identify risks to the delivery of our plans and take decisions on our priorities and solve problems.
You will find ways to develop team members to ensure effective delivery of technical or scientific activities. Ensuring appropriate skill levels are developed and maintained and team performance is optimised in line with specified goals.
You will be responsible for the health, safety & wellbeing of your team by actively promoting awareness and ensuring the provision of safe working practices in line with Environment Agency guidance.
You will be a role model and promote inclusion by respecting differences in our workforce and build a supportive & engaging workplace.
Based at our Laboratory in Leeds, you'll be part of the National Laboratory Service team that provides analytical services to the Environment Agency and external customers. The team in Leeds has 35 Analytical staff and around 12 Customer Services staff. The Leeds Laboratory specialises in the analysis of sediments, soils, waters and biota from England around the coastline and from inland waterways. The Laboratory also tests samples of waste to support waste regulation.
Experience and knowledge of the Environment Agency's chemical and physical analysis programme is an advantage but not essential as is working within an analytical chemistry laboratory.
You will need to know how to lead, motivate and develop your team so that they can be their best.
You will also need experience of managing the Health, safety and wellbeing of others.
You will need to be able to deliver work within tight timescales and to strict quality criteria.
You will preferably have experience of working within a quality standard or within a UKAS accredited laboratory.
Ideally, you will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject.
