We are looking for a senior nuclear regulator to join our Nuclear Regulation Group based in the North of England. The group regulates nuclear fuel cycle, power generation and defence nuclear sites based in the north and provides assessment services more widely. In this post you will be assessing new and advanced nuclear power station designs and the radioactive wastes that they generate. You will be providing advice on proposals for management, storage and disposal of radioactive wastes, including high activity wastes and spent fuel which will be disposed of in a future Geological Disposal Facility. You will work closely with internal and external customers, including senior technical staff in reactor vendors and at nuclear sites, and with colleagues in our Wallingford based Nuclear Regulation Group (South) and with staff of regulatory partners. Your work will help ensure that, through our regulation of existing nuclear sites and the advice we provide on future facilities, people and the environment will continue to be properly protected from hazards arising from disposals of radioactive wastes.
Nuclear Regulation Group (North) is based in Cumbria & Lancashire. It regulates nuclear sites under a number of legislative regimes including radioactive substances, pollution prevention and control, and COMAH. It assesses proposed waste disposals and new and advanced nuclear power station designs, providing advice on whether these would meet UK environment protection requirements and expectations. Ensuring we maintain the confidence of the public, local authorities, and other partners is an essential part of our role.
You will be someone with relevant experience of radioactive wastes including high activity wastes and spent fuel. This includes people who have had a role in operating, designing or specifying radioactive waste management facilities or developing radioactive waste management and safety cases. We’re seeking an individual with this expertise and who is, or has the potential to be, technically competent over an extensive range of nuclear industry and environmental issues. We will expect you to have a good understanding of Government nuclear policies and priorities and a wide national perspective on the regulation of the nuclear industry by the Environment Agency. You will be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and should bring a well-organised approach, with excellent communication, IT and team-working skills.
Contact: Alan McGoff (+447768 618800; alan.mcgoff@environment-agency.gov.uk) or Doug Ilett (+447795121883; doug.ilett@environment-agency.gov.uk).

In addition to applying your existing specialist expertise and skills we will want you to develop further as a regulator. You must have the ambition to learn and develop your talents and we will expect you to undertake a structured programme to develop your knowledge of the nuclear industry and your technical skills. A role in nuclear emergency and incident response may be required, including national arrangements for overseas and national nuclear incidents. You'll require security vetting to Security Check level. The role will be primarily office based. Travel to nuclear and other sites in England and Wales will be required. The post requires a full UK driving licence.
