This is an exciting opportunity to join the team that delivers maintenance work to Flood Risk Management assets in North Cumbria and to be part of a world leading Flood Incident Response capability.
You will work as part of a team delivering our varied programme of maintenance across North Cumbria. Day to day work includes: removing debris and vegetation from rivers, operating tools and machinery such as Robotic Flails, small construction jobs and ensuring that operational structures are in prime condition.
Alongside the delivery of our maintenance programmes, you will become a “Professional Operator” within our Incident Response Rotas, claiming standby allowance and overtime payment on top of the basic pay. This exciting part of the role involves operating our fixed assets (pumping stations and flood gates) and deploying our mobile ones (pumps and barriers) as part of a coordinated response to flooding or environmental incidents.

You will be entered onto the Level 3 Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship scheme, giving you a high quality training and development framework.
The North Cumbria Field Team maintain and operate Flood Risk Management Assets across North Cumbria serving the communities of Carlisle, Whitehaven, Egremont, Workington, Penrith, Keswick, Cockermouth and all in between. We work to protect these communities from the effects of Climate Change.
We are an emergency responder and regularly get called out to operate flood defences and to protect properties from flooding.
We welcome applications from anyone – from any background and mix of experience. You may have valuable transferrable skills, even if you don’t fit some of the examples below.

You should have some of the following experience (or similar)
• Doing physically demanding work such as: Grounds keeping, small building works, construction site experience, agricultural work.
• Delivering work to a target
• Working outdoors
• Problem solving
• Operating tools or machinery
• Staying safe at work – following guidance and procedures

These skills are essential for the job:
• You will be a good team-worker
• You will be a good communicator
• A full and clear UK driving license
• Ability to use and understand smartphones or iPads/iPhones
• A willingness to learn and participate in the Apprenticeship scheme

A full, valid and clean UK driving license is required.
