As Deputy Director for Governance & Engagement you’ll be at the centre of everything the Environment Agency does. Responsible for managing our most senior decision making forums and close advisor to senior Directors including the Chair and Chief Executive.

You’ll be our primary corporate link into Defra, wider Government and Parliament; from providing leadership to our place based teams in supporting local MP engagement to engagement with Ministers and Select Committees.

As the hub of the Environment Agency you’ll provide professional advice and evidence to help the organisation engage with individuals, business and communities. You’ll bring the customer view into our business decisions to improve outcomes and use feedback from our own staff to determine how we can support them to achieve the aspirations of our Environment Agency 5 year Action plan and the government’s 25 year plan for the environment.

You’ll be part of a wider team in the Chief Executives Directorate, have a seat at the Board and the Executive Directors Team and lead three dynamic teams of your own. This is a fantastic, fast track career opportunity from which the right individual will advance to anywhere across the Environment Agency, into wider government and beyond.
As Deputy Director for Governance & Engagement you’ll provide the leadership which motivates and enables the teams at the very heart of the organisation.

You’ll be responsible for leading a team of approximately 40 talented individuals who lead relationships with Defra Ministers, Government and Parliament, support our Executive Directors team, Chief Executive, Chair and Board, and provide expert professional advice and information to help the organisation engage with individuals, business and communities.
We’re looking for applicants who believe that providing great leadership is fundamental to our ability to protect the environment and effectively serve the communities we live in.
You’ll have excellent communications skills, good judgement, and be a great collaborator and facilitator. This position requires a level of diplomacy commensurate with a high profile role in public policy and senior relationship management. Alongside these responsibilities you’ll be rewarded with a level of trust and inclusion in leading the Environment Agency through some of the biggest challenges facing our environment.

You must be passionate about developing others, be innovative in your thinking and be a team player. You’ll also possess strong organisational skills all essential to delivering a busy portfolio of work.
For an informal conversation about this role please contact John Leyland, Chief of Staff: chiefofstaff@environment-agency.gov.uk or 02084 749740 (via his Executive Assistant Olivia Broad).
