Do you want to make the East Midlands a better place for people and wildlife by ensuring that our Regulated Industry Department remains one of the best performing teams in the country? If you do, we’re looking for a Senior Technical Leader who has the attitude, behaviours, courage and knowledge to make this happen.

As a Senior Technical Leader you’ll help lead the important things; assurance, communication, continuous improvement, learning and development and Quality Management. Your measure of success will be how successfully you drive these. You’ll be the role model for our officers and this will be reflected in your previous success and your environmental credentials. Make no mistake, this is a leadership role with a capital L!

Your leadership qualities will be blended with technical acumen. You’ll advise on the regulation of some very complex activities from Derbyshire’s cement plants to Scunthorpe’s integrated steel works, one of the most polluting installations in the country. You’ll also plan and deliver the direction of our work so you’ll have to be able to understand the strategic, operational and tactical challenges that complex sectors present as well as being able to manage other particularly challenging technical or public interest issues.
In the East Midlands we operate a Regulated Industry department that blends both Installations and Waste officers and their work into seven integrated teams, led by a Regulated Industry leadership hub. Our officers audit a wide range of sites to ensure that they comply with their permits and make complex assessments of environmental protection issues and use of resources. We also cover CoMAH, incidents, Non Site Based Regulation and Radioactive Substances Regulation.
Passionate about the environment, you’ll have considerable experience of technical leadership and be able to deliver results through others to the right standard, on time and within budget. You’re able to remain positive and focused on our priorities, even when conflicting demands conspire to knock us off course.

You’re able to use your initiative to take timely decisions to manage and prioritise a complex workload to tight deadlines. You’ll demonstrate strategic thinking in taking forward the department’s work and enhancing our reputation. You’ll have a strong commitment to people in our team and to our customers and have good communication, coaching, influencing and mentoring skills.

Knowledge of regulating industry or experience of leading in industry is desirable, and, because auditing is key skill, you’ll be able to demonstrate that you’re an exemplar environmental auditor.
