Are you an exceptional leader, willing to face one of the nation’s greatest environmental challenges? This senior role, in the Environment Agency’s national Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk management team, is a unique opportunity to shape the nation’s strategy for decades to come.

We are looking for someone strategic, influential, innovative and passionate - committed to delivering greater adaptation and resilience in flood and coastal erosion risk management, in response to the challenge of climate change.

Leading a team who work with communities, Government Ministers and the private sector, you will improve understanding of the nation’s flood risk, develop a strategy to help the community and government respond and adapt to the risk, and champion the commitment of others to improve the nation’s resilience to flooding.

This includes identifying future flood risk and investment opportunities, undertaking community, economic and social science research and developing the longer term strategic approach for improving how we manage and adapt to flood and coastal risk.

As a senior leader in the Environment Agency you will also be part of the wider team helping to protect and improve the nation’s environment, working closely with other senior leaders across the organisation.
The Directorate leads on how we help to minimise, predict and manage the risk of flooding in England. It sets the direction, manages stakeholder relationships and using the best available evidence gives expert advice to government. We set the direction for incident management across the Environment Agency, analyse investment needs, oversee the allocation of funding to capital and revenue projects, and promote warning services to help the public when at risk of flooding.
1. Seeing and understanding strategic opportunities, and using this ability with political acumen to lead and set direction, vision and culture for climate adaptation based on experience of both operational and policy roles.
2. Inspiring leadership and expert in giving a clear sense of direction, in a long term, ambiguous environment, which motivates and drives delivery.
3. Forging strong senior level relationships to influence externally and build trust and confidence in the Environment Agency’s ability to deliver its role, particularly with government.
4. Encouraging staff and championing the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce.
5. Anticipating, identifying, analysing and understanding trends and shifts in relevant political, economic, social, technical and environmental developments to shape business direction and translate strategy into action based on sound evidence.
6. Presenting the Environment Agency’s position to Ministers, Parliamentary Committees, the media and professional audiences in a confident and articulate manner.
