Awareness of the need to take action on climate change has never been higher but action must be informed by evidence. This is an exciting opportunity to develop the scientific information the Environment Agency needs to take action on climate change. You will be joining a team of scientists that leads research on climate change impacts and adaptation across our remit. The purpose of this role is to provide the highly specialised scientific knowledge, expertise and technical skills that are needed to shape the evidence that will make a difference. The work involves:

• Leading work to steer and shape research to fill critical evidence gaps
• Providing scientific analysis, interpretation and translation to support action by the Environment Agency and others
• Commissioning, undertaking and managing research to meet current and future needs for climate change science in water resources, hydrology, water quality and water supply, flood risk management, ecosystem function and resilience
• Helping to lead the work of the team in delivering high quality work with impact
• Developing innovative approaches to solve environmental problems.
The Climate Change and Resource Efficiency Research team provides expert scientific advice and analysis. The team of nine has leading expertise in climate impacts and adaptation. With strong links to academia and within the Defra family, we use and commission scientific research to improve the way the Environment Agency tackles the challenges faced by climate change.
This is a scientific role providing complex, technical support to others. Whether you developed your expertise through academic research or as a practitioner you will:

• Have an excellent understanding of climate change science
• Have proven expertise in using climate projections in a research context
• Have undertaken research on climate change impacts and provided adaptation advice
• Have experience undertaking climate change research in the Environment Agency’s core areas
• Possess experience in providing scientific advice to non-specialists.
• Hold a relevant degree (environment science, engineering, geography) and likely to have a PhD or similar
• Will be highly numerate with demonstrable skills in critical analytical science and robust quality assessment of scientific work
• Have the ability to develop and articulate a vision to develop an area of work
• Be a good communicator able to deliver work for and with a wide range of customers
The successful candidate will be based at Horizon House in Bristol, other Environment Agency offices may be considered for the right candidate. However, the work will require frequent travel to other Environment Agency locations.
