Are you looking for an opportunity to help protect and enhance our water environment?

Do you enjoy working with environmental information and data, and have experience in water quality, water resources or catchment planning?

As an Environment Planning Specialist, you’ll be part of a team that uses data and evidence to help inform and influence integrated working and investment in environmental improvement projects. You’ll work with others to ensure that our data is accurate and reliable. You’ll contribute your knowledge to plans and reports, providing advice to other teams, working groups and senior managers.

Our team focuses on water quality, catchment planning, water resources and the commissioning of our Area’s water monitoring programme, so there’s a variety of work to get involved with and specialise in. We work with numerous teams within the Environment Agency, plus external organisations e.g. Natural England and water companies, so you’ll build productive and influential relationships with a variety of customers and partners.

We support membership of an appropriate professional institute, e.g. CIWEM, and encourage ongoing learning and development.

The Environment Agency responds to a wide variety of environmental incidents and there will be opportunities to take on an incident role with all training provided.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The Integrated Environment Planning Team works to strengthen our evidence base, drive integrated delivery to achieve the best for Kent and South London’s environment.

The team includes specialists focusing on:
• River Basin Planning
• Commissioning our Area’s monitoring activities
• Water Quality
• Water Company investment programmes
• Drought management.

We work with other teams locally, nationally to shape ways of working, and contribute to our Area’s Local Outcome Plan and Defra’s 25-Year-Plan aims.
We are looking for candidates who:
• have an interest in using environmental data and evidence to help plan and deliver multifunctional environmental benefits
• have good research/analysis skills and the confidence to make proportionate, evidence-based decisions
• have proven communication, influencing and networking skills
• are able to bring people together and inspire collaboration and information sharing
• are able to coach and mentor others to improve resilience within the team
• are able to work under own initiative and as part of a larger, multidisciplinary team

Experience in water quality, water resources or catchment/river basin planning will be an advantage.

The Environment Agency: we don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment. We are looking for someone who will live and breathe this ethos to help us achieve our goal.
The role will be based at Orchard House, Addington, Kent. We currently have a hybrid working arrangement with a mix of home and office working.

Interviews will be held January 2023. We encourage you to refer to our "EA capability dictionary" which can be viewed by searching online using any web browser. You may find it helpful to research the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach when formulating your response.

For further details or an informal chat about the role, please contact Priya Sharma priya.sharma@environment-agency.gov.uk or Philippa Taylor philippa.taylor@environment-agency.gov.uk
