We are looking for a motivated and positive individual to work as part of a team that engages with developers and local planning authorities to secure the best possible environmental outcomes. Our work focuses on major development and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will lead on providing specialist flood risk advice to our major projects as well as supporting our Partnerships and Strategic Overview teams in Herts and North London Area.

Our Development and Flood Risk Advisor will be part of a local and National network of flood risk management advisors and specialists. They will lead on providing flood risk advice to our projects and work collaboratively to help deliver flood risk outcomes. As part of a wider team of technical advisors they will show leadership and help develop skills and capabilities in the team so we can all focus on better outcomes for people and places.

Your work will involve:
• Influencing customers and building relationships internally and externally.
• Leading and participating in local and national projects to achieve integrated solutions that progress effective change and improvement.
• Training and coaching others to equip them with technical knowledge and skills.
• Supporting the Programme Managers, utilising leadership and project management skills.
• Keeping up to date with legislation, evidence and policy and working with colleagues and partners.
• Supporting the work of our Partnerships and Strategic Overview teams.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team provides a dedicated full-time resource, with a greater ability to focus wholly on major development and infrastructure projects. The team consists of 3 Programme Managers who lead a team of specialist staff across several disciplines, each contributing their expertise and knowledge to the projects.
You'll be passionate about your work and confident to use your flood risk management knowledge and initiative to motivate others, achieving sustainable outcomes. You will have experience of leadership and successful delivery of projects. Good communication skills across a range of stakeholders is essential.

You’ll be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or science discipline. Most important is your energy, enthusiasm and willingness to learn and innovate.

You’ll have desire and enthusiasm to build relationships with customers and internal teams to ensure we achieve our goal of supporting sustainable development and helping people and property be more resilient to flooding.

Knowledge of some / all of the following are desirable:
• flood risk legislation
• development and planning
• river processes, hydrology and management of flood risk
• working with partners and customers
• engineering principles
• programming and project management
• tidal flood risk knowledge

You will need to be able to travel to meetings, sometimes in remote locations. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.

You will be required to support our incident management duties.

Contracted hours are 37 hours a week on a full time basis. The post will be based at our modern office in Welwyn Garden City, a short walk from the train station and the town centre. We support a mix of office and home working, determined by the type of work, meetings and the need to collaborate with colleagues
Legislative Knowledge
