The Deputy Director for Asset Operations and Improvements is an exciting and influential leadership role in our new national “Technical Authority” department for Asset Management and Engineering. You’ll be crucial in driving improvements in asset management systems and practices and ensuring consistently excellent standards in the way we operate and maintain all our infrastructure assets to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

Leading a team of asset management and continuous improvement professionals, you’ll focus on support for Area Directors and their teams of local asset operators, maintainers and responders, building the capacity and skills we need. The role will lead a strong Health and Safety culture supported by effective processes and systems relating to asset operation and maintenance.

You’ll lead reviews of asset management incidents and in that capacity will need to work with senior staff in other asset management organisations such as other risk management, navigation and water industry bodies (such as Local Authorities, Water Companies and Canals and Rivers Trust) and with government or external reviewers such as NAO.

Collaboration is key, and you’ll work with senior colleagues across the department and wider organisation to ensure we collectively make safe, reliable and sustainable asset management decisions.
The Environment Agency’s “Technical Authority” department for Asset Management and Engineering is led by our Chief Engineer. The department is responsible for asset management strategy, engineering and asset management standards and skills and for technical assurance that ensures our assets are safe, reliable and sustainable. The department is led by our Chief Engineer and plays a critical role in meeting our ambitious goals for protecting people from flooding and creating a better environment for all.
As an experienced leader, you’ll have a proven inclusive leadership ability to enable a diverse workforce to thrive and develop.
You’ll have excellent stakeholder (both internal and external) management skills with strong customer management and persuasion skills.

You’ll be skilled in managing programmes of work to improve systems and ways of working that drive continuous improvement in business practices in complex organisations.

You’ll be a chartered engineer or provide an equivalent demonstration of engineering skills and status and you’ll be a recognised asset management professional.
You’ll be recognised as a role model in the strategic leadership of multi-disciplinary standards, safety and the environment on the context of asset management and operation.
As part of the role you will be required to co-locate and work at other Environment Agency and delivery partner offices across the Delivery Hub. You may also be required to attend national meetings in locations such as London and Birmingham, with some overnight stays.
Driving licence ideally required as some driving may be necessary. Lease car is available where there is a clear business need.
When providing evidence for competencies within your application, please give examples of how you clearly demonstrate these either within the context of this role or as transferable skills.
Min Salary: £71, 000
