We’re looking for a Marine Technical Specialist to continue the collaboration with Natural England on the Water Framework (WFD) and Habitats Directive in the inshore marine environment of England. This post is a collaborative one between the Environment Agency (EA) and Natural England (NE). You will lead the design; planning and execution of a programme of monitoring in designated marine MPAs and integrate this with the WFD marine monitoring plans.

Other responsibilities will include:
• promoting the harmonisation of data assessment;
• creating efficiencies through coordinated interagency working;
• active contribution and scientific leadership within joint agency marine protected area monitoring groups
• identifying synergies between monitoring programmes and opportunities for integration;
• collating and reviewing data relevant to the achievement of the above objectives.
The post is managed by the Monitoring Survey: Estuarine and Coastal team of the Environment Agency. You will work alongside NE marine colleagues in your closest NE office day to day. Strong links will need to be formed between the EA and NE local area teams so good communication skills will be essential.
We are seeking a marine technical specialist with extensive field and office-based experience. You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and possess proven ability and/or knowledge of:

• some, or all, of the relevant European Directives (i.e. Water Framework, Habitats Directive) and National Legislation (Marine and Coastal Access Act, Wildlife and Countryside Act)
• relevant marine habitats found in England;
• health and safety issues in the marine environment is essential;
• the importance of quality control and practical experience of AQC procedures
• data handling using GIS, databases and spreadsheets and report writing
• statistical procedures relating to experimental design and analysis of marine biological data
The role will be based at the closest NE office to your location, with regular visits to the Environment Agency’s Monitoring Survey: Estuarine and Coastal Monitoring team based at various national locations. The post holder must be comfortable with flexible working and be prepared to travel within England to support fieldwork and liaise with key stakeholders. As a result the post requires a full UK driving license.
