This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in developing new understanding and approaches to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment. The post holder will
• Provide scientific expertise and support to a new research programme on environmental AMR that aims to develop approaches for monitoring and surveillance in environmental settings.
• Work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Environment Agency and partners in Defra, PHE and FSA.
• Prepare technical documents including project reports and contribute to the specification, management and delivery of project Tasks including those carried out by partners or contractors.
• Develop and maintain strong links to external research groups in industry and academe
• Link to colleagues in associated teams including other Research team members within the Chief Scientist Group as well as in monitoring and laboratory settings.
This is a brand new opportunity in a new technical area for the Agency. You will be integral to the successful delivery of a research and pilot monitoring programme. The work will involve reporting to senior managers, specifying research needs and working with colleagues, consultants and partners on delivery.
The Research team within the Chief Scientist Group provide scientific expertise on a wide range of topics and lead the delivery of new research findings and tools to the Environment Agency. .
• Higher degree obtained through research (PhD, MRes, or MSc)
• Detailed understanding of the biological, chemical and genetic basis of AMR
• Strong experience of molecular biology techniques used in microbial ecology
• A methodical, intelligent approach to problem solving
• The personal scientific credibility to be able to interact with external experts up to Chief Scientist level and be self-assured working alongside specialist contractors and others.
• Able to work as part of a small team, delivering a complex programme of work across multiple organisations sometimes to tight timescales.
• Strong communication skills for technical and lay audiences.
