Develops, reviews, audits and assures fluvial flood hydrology, and/or flood forecasting approaches using technical knowledge and experience to draw conclusions and support decisions. This includes carrying out an expert technical advisor role within project teams. Acts as a ‘point of contact’ for providing professional/technical expertise to internal customers and partner organisations.

Leads the coordination of operational activity on the River Thames. Helping to maintain the balance between the needs of competing uses (navigation, public water supply, ecological concerns). Develops strong collaborative relationships with internal and external customers and drives change where necessary. Resolves technical queries and leads the development of other staff delivering this role.

Provides technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and inspiration to others within Modelling and Forecasting. Ensures effective knowledge transfer and development of staff within the team and the wider department.
Our Inland teams provide leadership, technical expertise and specialist advice on building, running and analysing detailed flood models. The outputs are used to describe flood risk, provide evidence for determining potential impacts on communities and to help make incident management decisions.

We are experts in river flooding and hydrology. We support the delivery of flood incident and drought response, working closely with a range of partners, from water companies to the national Flood Forecasting Centre.
Through experience to date you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:

• Expert knowledge and / or considerable experience in flood hydrology and/or flood forecasting, either in a real-time or ‘non-real time’ environment
• A technical lead in industry standard modelling/analytical and GIS software packages, and highly computer literate
• You will be able to work under pressure and be skilled at making decisions and acting on them
• Your skills in influencing and persuading people at senior levels
• Data management and standards will be part of everything you do and you will have attuned and expert analytical skills
• You will be willing to work flexibly, including taking on an out of hours duty role
• Experience in prioritising high profile programmes / projects and the ability to manage your own workload and support others balance theirs.
• Professional membership of a relevant body
